Pineland Learning Center Uses Solar Array To Help Students Better Understand Conservation The PLC solar panel project is expected to supply 95 percent of the school's energy needs in addition to providing a critical lesson in conservation for the students. “The meter for the system was installed in early August,” said Fred Eccleston, Director of PLC. “Taking advantage of the sun's energy is good for the environment and for the students,” he said. “We want our students to understand the advantages of using renewable sources of energy. Now most of our energy requirements are being met with the help of solar energy.” The solar array has 854 panels, each of which provides up to 245 watts. The panels are mounted on the school's roof and cover 18,500 square feet. Eccleston said the array took about three months to install. “The solar array is part of a comprehensive energy plan,” Eccleston said. “In addition to the panels, the school has programmable thermostats throughout the building, as well as economizers in the HVAC system which reduces the load on condensers.” Pineland Learning Center, with campuses in Carmel and Vineland, is a private, non-sectarian day school educating at-risk students from kindergarten to twelfth grade from Atlantic, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester, Cape May and Salem Counties.
