PINELAND SCHOOL KICKS OFF JOB SHADOWING PROGRAM Students acquire job skills at local businesses to prepare for life after graduation VINELAND, NJ (Jan 20, 2010) – Pineland Learning Center (PLC), a private day-school providing individualized education programs, hosted an orientation to kick off their Job Shadowing program on Wednesday, January 19th. Anthony Fanucci, co-owner of Mori’s Restaurant at the Landis Theater and owner of Fanucci Insurance and Fanucci Real Estate, was the keynote speaker. Participants from the 2010 Job Shadowing Program also attended the event to share their experiences with the program. After the kick-off, a lunch was provided by students participating in the PLC Transition Pathways food service program. During the week of January 24th, each of the 17 participating eleventh-graders from Pineland High School will shadow an employee at a local business for a portion of the workday. Once they have completed their shadowing, they will assess their experiences to determine what skills, values or lessons they gained from the program, and will then share their findings with other PLC students. “With the economy in its current state and unemployment on the rise, it is imperative that we offer students the most thorough job training possible,” said Lisa Howell, Transition and Career Education Coordinator at Pineland Learning Center. “Our Job Shadowing program provides more than just training – it offers valuable work experiences that will give our students a competitive edge when they graduate and enter the job market.” Each shadowing student completed a survey to assess his or her interests and possible career paths. Based on the results, each student was then placed with the local business that most closely matched those interests. Participating companies this year include Best Buy in Millville or the Cumberland County SPCA, Hampton Inn, L.A. Male, Mori’s Restaurant, RK Auto Group, and Limpert Brothers, Inc. in Vineland. In his keynote, Fanucci spoke about the challenges and rewards of being an entrepreneur and the sacrifices to become successful. He also gave some advice to students to prepare them for their week of job shadowing. “Anyone can excel on the job,” said Fanucci. “Whenever I look for a new employee, I look for eye contact and a smile. A positive attitude can make all the difference in the workplace.” After Mr. Fanucci’s address, PLC Seniors who participated in the job shadowing week last year spoke to this year’s students and prepared them for their experience next week. “It wasn’t what I expected at all,” said Jenna M. about her experience at Lucia’s Restaurant in Vineland last year. “It was fun! Everyone was very helpful and I learned a lot.” <<back |
